Contribution of the Diesel Engine for Sustainable Mobility
Human being has been developing and enjoying the automobile civilization and commercial vehicle launched the heavy duty diesel engine has been contributing by main transportation system for development of society in the world. However the local and global environmental problems appear depend on the life of mankind, in the world. Especially, global warming is the most severe issue for human being's life on the earth. Mankind must create solutions for this situation, as soon as possible. Diesel engine has great potential for the global warming compatibility by it's high thermal efficiency and diesel vehicle is expected to improve the fuel saving for keeping resources in the world. So, diesel engine will be the one of the weapon for fight to the global warming and for saving the resources in future. This paper introduces the surrounding of the automobile, such as exhaust emission regulation for heavy duty diesel vehicle, amount and contribution of CO2 emission and noise. Next, this paper describes the background to the improvement of output and thermal efficiency of heavy duty diesel engine, the history of reduction of the exhaust emissions from heavy duty diesel engine and the compatibility technology for the environmental harmonization. After this paper presents the combustion concept, modernized combustion system and after-treatment system of heavy duty diesel engine. Then the new combustion and engine management technology for heavy duty diesel engine is described in this paper. Finally this paper discusses the future of the heavy duty diesel engine as a motive power source for heavy duty commercial vehicles and contribution of the diesel engine for sustainable mobility. In particular, this paper will summarizes the history of the heavy duty diesel engine, namely from yesterday to today and will look out the future of the heavy duty diesel engine, from multi-point of view, namely tomorrow, to sustain the mobility in human society. Especially, diesel engine has strong characteristics, not only high thermal efficiency but also flexibility for burning fuel. This paper will touch them, during discussion.
