The Thermal Fatigue Test and Analysis for Development of Railway Brake Disk Material
The thermal cracks caused by frictional heating on the brake disk surface have a seriously bad effect on braking performance and maintainability for disk-pad brake systems of railways or automotive vehicles. Therefore, many efforts to develop the brake disk materials with high heat resistance have been continued. The studies about test procedures and methodologies for material development, however, have not been performed that much. In the present study, 3 candidate materials were developed for comparative tests. For developing highly heat-resistant brake disk materials, then we performed the fundamental mechanical tests and microstructural analysis as well as the thermal fatigue tests with small cylindrical specimens using induction heater. And a numerical analysis using FEM was also carried out for verifying developed thermal fatigue test system's performance. As a conclusion, we could select the material has the best thermal characteristics. Also the thermal fatigue test procedure and the analysis method for verifying that system were suggested.
